Seventy-five high school students are living and learning journalism this week as a part of the 2007 Georgia Journalism Academy. In its 22nd year, students from Georgia, Florida and North Carolina are taking a weeklong course in one core area and one elective during the June 10-16 Academy. Core areas include news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, broadcast writing and, broadcast photography, photography or graphic design. Electives include staff development and leadership, advertising and public relations. Classes are being taught by Grady College faculty, staff and graduate students. Working as a team, Academy students will produce The Pulse, a 12-page newspaper written, designed and edited by the students, and a broadcast news show written and produced by the students. In the evenings during the week, students have a chance to socialize by bowling, dancing and having a picnic at Lake Herrick. Counselors made popcorn and cotton candy on Monday for the students to watch Shattered Glass, a 2003 film about Stephen Glass, a journalist who fabricated 27 out of 41 stories he wrote for The New Republic, Rolling Stone Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and George.
